Sept. 9-11, 2011

Come join us next September for the ninth annual American Banjo Camp. The dates are Sept. 9-11, 2011 and the place once again is Fort Flagler State Park, in Nordland, Washington. American Banjo Camp offers a weekend of intense instruction with some of the best old-time and bluegrass banjo players around, plus demonstrations, concerts, and plenty of jamming opportunities.

We now also offer a full-time Fiddle Program, a full-time Guitar Program, and an optional Extra Day beginning on Thursday evening Sept. 8 (for details, see below).

We're very proud to announce our well-traveled staff of all-stars. Bluegrass Instructors: - Janet Beazley (California) - Great band-player & teacher - Bill Evans (California) - One of the most versatile players and instructors around - Gerald Jones (Texas) - As much at home in jazz & swing as he is in trad. bluegrass - Bill Keith (New York) - Creator of melodic style - Alan Munde (Texas) - Legendary picker and innovator

Old-time Instructors: - Mac Benford (New York State) - Genial clawhammer innovator and great all-around teacher! Formerly banjoist for famed Highwoods String Band. - Bob Carlin (North Carolina) - One of the most knowledgeable old-time banjo teachers around - Cathy Fink (Maryland) - Renowned performing artist & Grammy winner, not to mention great clawhammer picker - Ken Perlman (Massachusetts) - Pioneer of melodic clawhammer; author of several widely acclaimed clawhammer instruction manuals - Tom Sauber (California) - Great old-time player on both fiddle and banjo; formerly of the well-known trio "Tom, Brad & Alice." - Molly Tennenbaum (Seattle) - Innovative & widely respected southern-style picker

Novice Program: Mike Stahlman from Portland heads up the bluegrass-novice program; Laura Smith of Bellingham heads up the old-time novice program.

The ABC Fiddle Program. We offer a full time fiddle program at ABC. Our principle fiddle instructor is Greg Canote; fiddle classes will also be offered by Paul Elliott and Tom Sauber.

New this Year -- The ABC Guitar Program. For the first time, we will offer a full time program in guitar this year. The teaching duties will be split among Jere Canote, Peter Langston, & Chris Luquette.

Accompanists: Greg & Jere Canote (old-time fiddle and guitar), Paul Elliott (bluegrass fiddle), and Peter Langston (bluegrass guitar). All our accompanists are from the Seattle area.

The ABC Extra Day. Our Extra Day gives students a chance to get to know each other and the staff, and to ease their way into the regular Camp with a bunch of low pressure activities in a relaxed atmosphere. Last year, the student open mic and band scramble held on Thursday evening -- not to mention the ensuing square dance -- were greatly enjoyed by all. On Friday morning, we'll probably schedule a set of round-robin demonstrations. There is a small extra tuition charge for students who wish to take part in the Extra Day, which also covers the cost of lodging and meals (dinner on Thursday through lunch on Friday).

You can access artists' bios, logistical information, and registration form on our website, http://www.americanbanjocamp.com. If you have any questions or concerns, don't hesitate to email us at info@americanbanjocamp.com.

Bluegrass In The Cathedral

Join Molly and Tenbrooks and The Panhandle Polecats on September 30, 2011 for rockin’, stompin’ Bluegrass in historic St. John’s Cathedral on the south hill in Spokane. We intend to fill this beautifully lofty space with the warmth of classic Bluegrass and the close harmonies both these bands are famous for. This event benefits Catholic Charities of Spokane and the wonderful work they do for our community. Catholic Charities administers 15 programs which provide food, shelter, clothing, education, counseling and support to those in need, regardless of creed. They are not concerned with whether folks that are helped are of any particular faith, or of no faith. What Catholic Charities cares about is whether folks are cold or hungry. Please come and enjoy wonderful wine, rafters ringing with the best Bluegrass around, and the knowledge you are helping to support those in need in Spokane.
