Workshop Summaries

Band Marketing ( Kevin Pace) : Will share helpful hints in making your band more marketable, sharing experiences and techniques from the early beginnings of  his band, The Early Edition.

Banjo 1 & 2 ( Bill Musgrove):  (1)  Proper right & left hand techniques, learning melodies, rhythm, simple rolls/chords &  chops;  (2)  More complex solos and driving the rhythm.

Bass (Jim Adams): "The 5 essentials for the searing, sautéing, sizzling, and serving the succulent largemouth bass."  All skill levels.  We will focus on
total concept bass playing, technique, bass line construction, feel, and timing.

Children’s Vocals (Dannie Lynn Plummer):   Developing vocal strength and control with some simple, fun songs for kids.

Dobro (Dave McRae):  We will focus on ways a dobro fits in the mix of the band, how simple parts can be as effective as playing “fancy”, and how dobros can be rhythm instruments too. 
We will end with “jamming to an easy song, aiming for a different “place in the mix” with a simple sound.

Fiddle 1 & 2 (Aaron Castilla):  (1):  Basic improvisation & chops; backing the lead singer/player; (2) More advance techniques & swing.

Guitar 1 & 2 (Kelly Bogan): (1) Basic concepts of guitar scales, chords, rhythm strumming techniques, exercises, and some basic songs. (2) Ideas on the guitar’s
place in the band, more advanced “licks”, techniques, rhythms, and playing up the neck.

Harmonica (Dave McRae):  Straight harp v. cross harp, getting clear single notes, rhythm” licks”, simple trills/bends.  How to maintain harmonicas by keeping them clean.

Harmony (Dannie Lynn Plummer):    How to find your vocal part, practice techniques, and vocal blend.

Instrument “Petting Zoo” (Dave McRae):  Have you ever wanted to play another instrument…but didn’t even know how to hold it?  Dave will share his expertise
as a one man band on a variety of instruments as well as a few other surprises up his sleeve!

Mandolin 1 & 2 (Sam Lyman): (1) Introduction to music theory applied to the mandolin; focus on scales, chords, double-stops, tremolo & playing up the neck.                      

(2) Mandolin blues & blues roots of bluegrass; basic blues songs while focusing on scales, tremolo & blues licks.  Please bring something to record the sessions
as the workshops are intended as starting points for developing new skills.

Slow Jam (Kirk Rowbotham):  Welcome to beginning Bluegrass jamming!  Learn the basics to enjoy playing music with others and play some Bluegrass standards together.

Song Writing (Stan Hall):  Stan will share with you his sources of inspiration, “turning a phrase”, and other secrets as an accomplished songwriter.

Stage Presence (Kevin Pace):  Elements that make for a great stage presence including how you act , your appearance, keeping the show moving and connecting with the audience.

Swing Guitar (Sam Saxton): Elements of swing, circle of 5ths, chords, & rhythm by a real master of swing.

Vocals (Dannie Lynn Plummer):  Developing your voice as an instrument, dynamics, vocal control.
